Stay Sun Safe This Summer: Essential Tips

As summer approaches, it’s time to enjoy the sunshine—but it’s also important to be mindful of the effects of the sun on our skin. The sun’s UV rays can cause damage such as sunburn, dryness, heat rashes, and even premature aging. Additionally, the change in weather can affect sensitive skin, and hay fever may trigger reactions in allergy-prone individuals.

To help you stay safe in the sun, here are some essential tips:

Slather on the Sunscreen!

No matter your skin type, sunscreen should be a daily essential. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Always apply sunscreen to protect against UV damage.
  • Even on cloudy days, UV rays can penetrate through, so don’t skip it!
  • Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming.
  • Choose a high-protection sunscreen—SPF 30 or higher is recommended.

Other Ways to Protect Your Skin

  • Seek shade when the sun is at its strongest, between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • Cover up with lightweight, protective clothing.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat to shield your face, ears, and neck.
  • Use UV-protected sunglasses to safeguard your eyes from harmful rays.

Soothe Sunburn with After-Sun Products

Too much sun exposure can leave your skin red, painful, and irritated. To ease sunburn:

  • Use after-sun lotions to replenish moisture and relieve discomfort.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
  • Take painkillers if needed to reduce pain or inflammation.

Prickly Heat & Heat Rash Relief

Hot, humid weather can lead to heat rash, which occurs when blocked sweat ducts trap sweat under the skin. Symptoms can range from itchy, prickly sensations to red bumps and blisters.

  • Apply aloe vera gel or after-sun lotion to cool the affected areas (store them in the fridge for extra relief!).
  • Take a cold or lukewarm shower to soothe irritation.
  • Avoid products with petroleum or mineral oil, as they can clog pores further.

Hydration Is Key

Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your body and skin hydrated. Proper hydration helps maintain your skin’s elasticity and prevents dryness.

Skincare & Beauty Must-Haves for Summer

  • Thermal Waters & Mists: Refresh and hydrate your skin on the go with a cooling mist. These also strengthen the skin’s barrier and keep it looking healthy.
  • Make-Up with SPF: Opt for a foundation or tinted moisturizer that includes SPF for extra protection.
  • Self-Tan: Want a summer glow without the sun damage? Choose a self-tan instead of prolonged sun exposure.
