Bitten or Stung this Summer?

Whether you are hiking through Killarney National Park, having a BBQ in the back garden, or just out for an evening walk, summer in Ireland often means dealing with bugs. While most bites and stings are more annoying than dangerous, knowing how to treat them can save you a lot of itching, swelling, and stress.
Here is what to know about the usual suspects and how to keep yourself and your family comfortable all season long.
Midges
These tiny biting flies are especially active in damp, sheltered areas like forests, lakesides, and the west coast. Their bites often come in clusters and can be incredibly itchy. To avoid them, wear long sleeves and cover up during evenings. If you do get bitten, an anti-itch cream or an antihistamine can help ease the discomfort.
Mosquitoes
Warm, still evenings and areas near water can bring out Irish mosquitoes. Their bites may swell into red, itchy lumps. Try not to scratch as this can cause irritation or infection. A cool compress and a soothing cream will usually do the trick.
Wasps and bees
Most wasp and bee stings are sharp and sudden, followed by swelling. A cold pack can help reduce the discomfort. If a stinger is left behind, more likely from a bee, gently remove it using something with a flat edge such as a card. If you notice swelling around the face or lips, or have any trouble breathing, it is best to get medical attention promptly.
Ticks
Ticks are found in grassy and wooded areas, especially where there is wildlife. If you find one attached to your skin, remove it as soon as possible with fine tweezers or a tick tool, gripping close to the skin and pulling straight out. Wash the area and keep an eye out for symptoms like a rash or feeling unwell. If you are unsure, contact your GP.
Infections
Most bites and stings settle down within a couple of days. But if the area becomes increasingly red, swollen, or starts to ooze, it could be infected. If you feel unwell or the bite is not healing, it is time to speak with your pharmacist or doctor.
